A cleaning agent for use in the fire-exposed parts of boilers comprises an aqueous solution of (A) a surfactant which is an alkylnaphthalene sulphonate, an alkylbenzene sulphonate, an alkyl phenol polyglycol ether or an alkyl phenol ethyl ether or a mixture of two or more thereof; and (B) a gas-developing component which is ammonium carbonate, ammonium bicarbonate, ammonium carbamate, ammonium oxalate, ammonium formate, ammonium nitrate, an azobicarbonamide, an azobis isobutyronitrile, a substituted thiotriazol or a ureaperoxide or a mixture of two or more thereof, the said aqueous solution being substantially free of alkaline alkali metal compounds. Optional components are (1) corrosion inhibitors e.g. ammonium phosphate or zinc phosphate; (2) oxidizing or combustion catalysts, e.g. NH 4 NO 3 , ammonium chromate, copper or zinc salts especially complexes with ammonia.
