Diesel engine with liquid cooling and lubricating systems - uses fuel from engine fuel tank for cooling and lubricating

A diesel engine (1) has a fuel tank (5). Fuel is drawn from this to a carburetter or injection pump (11) and delivered to the cylinders of the engine. A pump (13) with a level controller (14) draws fluid from the fuel tank and delivers it to the sump (3) of the engine. A conventional lubricating system pumps it from there to the various parts needing lubrication from which it returns by gravity to the sump. Fluid is also pumped in a closed circuit between the cooling passages of the engine and a fluid cooling radiator (17). This system is kept filled by a pump (20) with a level controller (21) drawing from the fuel tank (5). The use of a common source for all three systems simplified maintenance.
