The section of the IC engine exhaust system is particularly intended for a thermal reactor section or as a section immediately behind the engine exhaust or the first expansion chamber in a two-stroke engine. The metallic inner wall (2) of this section has an outer cover (3) formed fromm a pastelike material, possibly with fibre or fabric filling, such as asbestos cement or a ceramic mass. To achieve crackless setting of this cover, heat is supplied from the metallic inner wall (2) only so that inclusions, such as moisture from the cement, escape outwards to the lower-temperature region and to atmosphere. The setting process may be achieved by the heat developed during the engine test run or running-in prior to final inspection.
