1516284 Oil recovery TH GOLDSCHMIDT AG 19 July 1976 [19 July 1975] 29985/76 Heading E1F An oil recovery process comprises flooding an oil deposit with an aqueous solution containing from 0.001-10% by weight of a surface-active betaine having, as the hydrophilic radical, at least one quaternary ammonium group which is capable of forming an inner salt intramolecularly with an acid group, and, as the oleophilic radical, at least one radical derived from a napthenic acid. Preferably the betaine has the formula: in which R<SP>1</SP> CO is a radical derived from a napthenic acid, R<SP>2</SP> is a C 2 -C 6 alkylene radical R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are the same or different and are a C 1 -C 4 alkyl radical, R<SP>5</SP> is a C 1 -C 3 alkylene radical, R<SP>6</SP> is the same as R 3 or R 4 , and the two nitrogen atoms are constituents of a heterocyclic ring. The betaine may also be the reaction product of a halogeno carboxylic acid with a compound of the formula in which R<SP>7</SP> is the acid radical derived from a napthenic acid, R<SP>3</SP> is as above, and R<SP>8</SP> is an amino, acrylic or cyclic alkylamino or hydroxy group.
