1516385 Polymer/polyol compositions and their production; polyurethanes UNION CARBIDE CORP 27 Aug 1975 [28 Aug 1974 3 July 1975] 35430/75 Headings C3L and C3R A liquid polymer/polyol composition comprises (1) 45 to less than 80 wt. per cent of a polyoxypropylene polyol having a molecular weight (defined) of at least 2000, and (2) from 55 to more than 20 wt. per cent of an acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer comprising (a) 60-90 wt. per cent polymerized acrylonitrile and (b) 40-10 wt. per cent polymerized styrene, the polymer being in the form of particles whose diameter does not exceed 30 microns, dispersed in the polyol, the composition having been produced by polymerizing a mixture of acrylonitrile and styrene in the polyol. The composition is used as a precursor for the formation of polyurethanes, by reaction with a polyisocyanate. Examples describe the use of various polyols derived from propylene oxide and reactants such as glycerine, glycerine and ethylene oxide, and dipropylene glycol. Other examples describe the preparation of polyurethane elastomers by reaction of the prepared polymer/polyols with tolylene diisocyanate. Certain specific compositions are expressly excluded. |
