A vessel 10 for transporting logs comprises a buoyant hull having a flooded enclosure defined by stern section 11, bow section 12, a rigid submerged log supporting surface 14 including a stern gate 18 hinged at 19 and a pair of buoyant side walls 14. The lower portion of the stern gate 18 is below the unloaded water line of the vessel, the upper edge of the stern gate is above the maximum load water line. Chains (21), Fig. 2 (not shown), (24) and (25) initiate and maintain the flow of logs from the stern section when discharging. Side walls 14, which are interconnected by hollow transverse bottom girders 15 and upper girders (16), Fig. 2, also contain auxiliary discharge ports 26. The log supporting surface 13 is a buoyant bottom wall formed with a plurality of ports (32), Fig. 4 (not shown) and comprises foamed polyurethane (29) sandwiched between tank plates (30), (31). The vessel can be trimmed by after port and starboard ballast tanks 33. |
