1458829 Nitrodiphenylamine hair dyes BRISTOL-MYERS CO 21 Dec 1973 [26 Dec 1972] 59333/73 Heading C4P [Also in Division D1] Direct dyes for dyeing human hair of Formula I where R is an electron-donor group, y is 0 or 1 and x is 1 or 2 are prepared by reacting a mono- or dinitrofluoro (or chloro)benzene with aniline or an R-substituted aniline. R is preferably C 1-6 alkyl, -OH, -O-aliphatic or -NR 1 R 2 where R 1 and R 2 are H or aliphatic, the aliphatic groups in R having 1 to 6 atoms. Dyes of Formula IV where R5 is -OH, -NH(hydroxyalkyl), -N(hydroxyalkyl) 2 or -OC 1-6 alkyl and of Formula V are claimed per se, the hydroxyalkyl groups in Formulµ IV and V having 2 to 4 C atoms and 1 to 3 OH groups. The dyes of Formula I give yellow, orange and red shades when used to dye human hair and may be used together with other dyestuffs.
