Minutely dispersed solid contaminants are removed from a polar liq., esp. water, by treatment in an electrically insulating environment, (a) ensuring that the liq. has at least 0.1 wt.% of particles which will accept a charge, of density 1.05-2g/cm3, diameter 30-225 microns and surface energy 100-500ergs/cm2; (b) providing metal ions to impart a charge to the particles, and introducing sulphur dioxide while keeping the pH at 2-2.5; (c) introducing oxygen to expose the particles to oxidising conditions; (d) keeping the liq. flowing to prevent coalescence of the particles; (e) changing the pH to 8-11 to reverse the charge on the particles; (f) electrically grounding the suspension, allowing the particles to coalesce, (g) separating the solid and liq. phases. The process can be used on a variety of effluents, pref. aqs. e.g. sewage, cooling water contg. toxic additives etc. The process is continuous, and can be adjusted to remove a wide range of contaminant, including microbes.
|
