<p>1493551 Differential gearing EATON CORP 30 Jan 1976 [13 Feb 1975] 03723/76 Heading F2D [Also in Division B7] A tandem axle drive assembly 11 for a vehicle having a gear-box 5, two driven rear axles R 1 , R 2 and a driven front axle F comprises an interaxle differential 29 which divides driving torque received from the gear-box 5 through an input shaft 21 between the two rear axles and includes a first side gear 47 having teeth 55 meshing with a gear 59 for driving the leading rear axle R 1 , and a second side gear 51 coupled to a shaft 21 for driving the trailing rear axle R 2 , there being in mesh with the gear 59 a gear 103 connectible by means of a clutch 111 to a shaft 101 for driving a propeller shaft S extending forwards to the front axle F so that torque from the first side gear 47 drives the front axle in addition to the leading rear axle. The clutch 11 may be controlled manually or automatic control means may be provided which engage the clutch when a speed differential between the front axle and the rear axles indicates that there is rear wheel slip. A clutch 87 for locking the differential 39 is engaged automatically when a speed difference of more than a predetermined amount occurs between the leading and trailing rear axles.</p> |
