A stable pourable aqueous suspension comprises (a) a finely divided water-insoluble abrasive material, preferably in an amount of 35-55%, (b) not less than 1%, preferably 2-5%, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and (c) not less than 5% of an alkali metal condensed phosphate, all percentages being by weight of the non-abrasive components present. Abrasive (a) may be felspar, pumice, kieselguhr, emery or carborundum, but is normally silica. Phosphate (c) may be a pyro- or hexameta-phosphate, but sodium tripolyphosphate is preferred. The composition may also include small amounts, e.g. up to 5%, or anionic and nonionic surface-active agents such as soap, sodium lauryl sulphate or dodecylbenzene sulphonate, alkylphenol/ethylene oxide condensates, and (preferably) alkanolamide, e.g. lauric diethanolamide; mixtures of alkanolamides and anionic detergents are however excluded. Sodium carbonate, sulphate or orthophosphates, ethanol perfume, dye, pigment, fluorescent agents, bactericides, preservatives and bleaching agents may also be incorporated.
