A device for clearing the sludge from a settling tank, has a scraper blade at the bottom end of a pivoting arm. This is supported by a mechanism on a mobile bridge, together with a clearer which simultaneously removes the floating sludge from the surface of the water. The motion of the bottom scraper from the end of the clearing stroke into the transport position and back to starting point, controls the motion of the surface clearer. The surface clearer which is attached to a pivoting arm on the bridge is also supported by an auxiliary lever fixed rigidly to the pivoting arm of the bottom scraper. During the motion of the bottom scraper arm from the transport position into a partially lowered position, the auxiliary lever moves through a peak position. The auxiliary lever is at right angles to the bottom scraper arm and supports the top clearer lever by means of a roller from which the clearer lever can be lifted. On the shaft forming the pivot of the bottom scraper arm, there is a lever connected to a cylinder and plunger anchored to the bridge. Shortcomings of known machines are remedied. The motions of the bottom and surface clearers are coordinated so that the bottom blade can be lowered partially from its transport position before the end of the tank is reached, so as perhaps to pass beneath a submerged wall, without the surface clearer being lowered. The surface clearer only comes into action at the end of the tank, when the bottom clearer is in position, so that the clearing run and the empty run back to start take place much more quickly.
