The working desk is for coding data on items, typically envelopes, and has an inspection position for examination of the items and a movable keyboard for typing the data with which the items are to be coded. It has an armrest (20) on the opposite side of the inspection position (10) to the keyboard (21), the position also forming a stacking support for the items. The operator inserts the items by hand, after removal from the stack, in order to process them in a loading position (13) in a conveyor system (14, 15, 25, 29-31), her arm being supported by the armrest during this operation. Heads (16, 17) along the conveyor system are coupled to the keyboard, to print the data on the passing items, which are then transported to a side portion of the desk, and to which a front desk portion (1) is detachably secured. The front portion incorporates the stacking and inspection position, the printing heads, the keyboard, the armrest, the printing mechanism and part of the conveyor.
