[Also in Divisions B8, H1 and H2] In an overhead conveyer system in which several crabs are adapted to enter or leave a loading station, the field structures 1, 2, of a number of reversible linear induction motors are mounted on a track 11, the body 12 of a crab constituting an armature. The crab also comprises retractable dogs 13, running rollers, a centring roller, and a hole 16 to receive a load support hook. In the unloaded position, all the fields are directed to the outlet except the outlet field. The first crab to enter actuates contact 17a located at a position where two adjacent fields are in opposition. The second crab to arrive actuates contact 17b to reverse the supply of the odd field winding situated immediately ahead of its position. The contact 17c is operated by the third crab to prepare for control of the contact 17d, and so on, the contact 17e indicating that the device is full and preventing the arrival of further crabs. For departure, reversing switches 6 are changedover whereby all the driving forces created by the fields are directed to the outlet. The first crab to leave operates contact 17f to change the reversing switches to their previous position. All the crabs will then have advanced by one step. The contact 17e releases to permit the entrance of a further crab into the device. Other contacts may be provided to permit two crabs to leave simultaneously. A storage magazine comprises a plurality of bins containing loads resting on pallets. A transfer handling device is carried on rails between which are disposed a number of armatures centred in relation to the corresponding columns of bins. The handling device has a pair of field structures on its lower part, Fig. 11 (not shown).
