In a belt grinding machine, with at least one longitudinally movable grinding belt, at least the grinding portion of the belt is pivotable about a shaft approximately perpendicular to the direction of feed of the material to be ground and parallel to the plane of the grinding surface of the belt relative to a bearing surface in order to form a space which narrows in the manner of a wedge in the direction of feed of the material to be ground. A workpiece 1, Fig. 1, is fed in the direction of the arrow 2 between grinding belts 5, 6 which are pivotally adjustable about shafts 8, 9 so that the gaps 10, 12 at the inlet and outlet correspond to the initial and finished thickness of the workpiece. One belt may be replaced by a bearing surface; this may be pivotally adjustable. In a modification, Fig. 2, the belts 5, 6 run transversely of the face of the workpiece; plates 16 pivotally adjustable about shafts 8, 9 carry pressure shoes 13 by means of springs, the springs 14 at the inlet being weaker than the springs 15 at the outlet. Part of the shoe has a covering of felt 18 with a lubricating coating 19; the lengths of the felt covered surface and the uncovered surface are in a ratio of about 15 : 1. |
