Sleepers are packed in a regularly cycled order that always includes two or more sleepers being packed simultaneously. In a group of four sleepers the first and third, first and fourth, first and second or second and third may be packed at one time, the remaining two sleepers being packed at the second stage. The operation may be performed by a rail mounted packing machine I having a magnetic track lifter 7 and hydraulic jack 11 for lifting the track to a level monitored by reference line 13. The sleeper pairs are packed by oscillating tools 16, 17 the spacing of which is adjustable by a jack 29 and which may be moved together in the direction of the track by a jack 25. |
