Several such tools may be arranged laterally of the track. There may be two penetrating tools 7 one either side of the tool 3. The tools may be mounted with compression springs 5. The action of the tools is preferably vibratory. Hydraulic or mechanical drive may be provided. The machine on which the tools are mounted may be provided with automatic levelling device and track lifting tools. The surface contact of the compactor may have a flat surface or may be provided with small projections.
