1382516 Boring earth &c DRESSER INDUSTRIES INC 10 Oct 1972 [24 Nov 1971] 46657/72 Heading E1F In a lubricating system for a roller bit a lubricant reservoir 30, Fig. 2, communicates with bearings 19 to 22, and with the outside of the bit through a filter 32, the filter allowing equilisation of pressure between the lubricant in the bit and the environmental fluid. The reservoir may alternatively be provided with a flexible diaphragm 78, Fig. 4, one side of the diaphragm being in communication with the environment via a passage 79, and the other side enclosing the lubricant which is in communication with the environment via a filter 84. In a further alternative embodiment, Figure 5 (not shown), the lubricant reservoir (90) is in communication with the environment via a filter (92) located in a flexible diaphragm (86). A seal 69 is provided which prevents fluid flow between the cutter 14 and bit body 13 both inwardly and outwardly, but alternatively, a seal (44), Figure 3 (not shown), may be provided which prevents fluid flow inwardly only.
