1,266,048. Coated sheet materials. MITSUBISHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 2 July, 1969 [6 July, 1968; 3 June, 1969], No. 33324/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Division B5] A method of making a composite body of metal and a polyolefin comprises applying a binder to a surface of said metal and/or to a surface of said polyolefin, the main component of said binder being a maleic acid-vinyl acetate copolymer, an acrylic acid-vinyl acetate copolymer, a partial ester of a maleic acidvinyl acetate copolymer, a partial ester of a maleic acid-styrene copolymer or a mixture thereof, assembling said metal and said polyolefin such that said binder is interposed therebetween, and applying pressure to the resultant assembly while heating the same to a temperature at which the surface of the polyolefin in contact with the metal melts to effect bonding. The polyolefin may be foamed or non-foamed, may be in the form of a sheet, powder or pellets and may be surface treated prior to bonding e.g. by flame, solvent, hot air, acid, electric discharge or by grafting a high molecular weight hydrophilic compound thereon. Specified polyolefins are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene and copolymers of olefins with other olefins or with non-olefinic monomers. The metal may be in the shape of a sheet, plate or block and may comprise iron, aluminium, copper, zinc, nickel, tin, magnesium, titanium or manganese or an alloy thereof. The binder is preferably applied in the form of a solution by dipping, spraying or brushing. |
