An explosive or gas producing composition comprises ammonium perchlorate, at least 5% by weight of ammonium nitrate, at least 0.003% by weight of a metal, in elementary form or as a compound, and at least one chloride anion per metal atom in excess of the number which would be present by adding the metal as its chloride, the metal having a standard oxidation potential of not more than 2.0 volts. The preferred metals are Cr, Cu, Ag, and Ni, but reference is also made to Fe, Au, Pd, Co, Ce, Zr, Ti, Pb, Mn, Hg, Bi, Pt, Zn, Cd, and Al. Suitable metal compounds and nitrates, carbonates, sulphates, chromates, and dichromates, e.g. potassium dichromate or copper chromite. The chloride anion may be added as sodium, potassium, or ammonium chloride. |
