<p>The safety valve for pipes and vessels is partic. for nuclear reactors, acting as a barrier against high operating pressure on the primary side, and automatically opening under excess pressure on the secondary side as compared with the primary operating pressure, which is normally the higher. A bursting membrane in a flange union seals the two sides from each other, and is supported against the operating pressure by a sieve-type body. The membrane is of such dimensions that with increasing secondary pressure it deflects to a max. point, where bursting occurs, on encountering a pointed piercing device on the primary side and normally clear of it. The distance between the membrane and the device with the former in the rest position is less than the max. amount of deflection so that the membrane is positively pierced before max. deflection occurs.</p> |
