The specified number of coins from a coin counting machine or from a storage vessel is placed in a two-part coin tube in order to produce a coin column. Coins are then gripped by gripping pins and, after the tube is opened, they are transferred to a packing station where they are wrapped in a paper strip whose ends are folded and the whole is shaped into a coin roll. It is released after withdrawal of the gripping pins. Gripping pins (12, 13) fastened to holders (23, 27) and heads (21, 22) carry out a vertical movement in addition to their movement between the coin tube (9) and packing station (11). During this vertical movement the top head (21) is moved upwards and bottom head (22) downwards. In order to shorten the stroke,the lower gripping pin (13) moves downwards in its head (22) when it has reached a certain point.
