Silage is prepared using calcium formate as silaging auxiliary, the starting concentration of calcium formate being 1-5% by weight. In the aforementioned starting concentration, calcium formate is extremely effective as silaging auxiliary and the formation of butyric acid is completely suppressed; however the lactic acid fermentation is not impaired but promoted. The silage prepared with the aid of calcium formate is, despite the high starting concentration, physiologically harmless. The calcium formate is primarily used as such, but can also be mixed with other substances which either themselves have an effect as a silaging auxiliary or are inert. |
