1,230,909. Magnetic recording disc apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 28 Aug., 1969 [31 Aug., 1968], No. 42928/69. Heading G5R. Flexible magnetic discs 10 having apertures at their inner areas and mounted on a rotatable shaft 5 for co-operation with an axially and radially movable head 13 are enclosed in a drum 38 of perforated material. The apertures in the discs encourage axial inflow of air and radial outflow to the perforated drum. The discs are clamped 7, 8 with spacing rings and are deflected at their periphery when the head 13 is engaged. The head is slit to receive the discs and is traversed along a rod 20 by a cable 24 driven by a stepping motor 27, and shifted radially by tilting of carriage 17 by rod 82 connected by arms 28, 30 to a further rod 29 rotated by a cable 34 driven by a stepping motor 37. The drum 38 may taper and the perforation density decrease towards the ends, may be fixed or rotatable, and may enclose the discs, head and positioning mechanism.
