1,236,428. Silicon and silicon nitride bodies. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 22 Aug., 1969 [29 Aug., 1968], No. 41202/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C3] In the production of silicon nitride bodies, a binder comprising a mixture of silicon powder and a solution of ammonium alginate is used, this binder being applied to the faces of structures made from silicon powder or partially nitrided silicon powder, the treated faces then being brought into contact under pressure, dried and the liquid evaporated, and the resulting body heated in an atmosphere of nitrogen until a homogeneous Si 3 M 4 structure is produced. The silicon powder of the binder may be fine enough to pass through a 400 B.S. mesh sieve and the ammonium alginate solution preferably is a 1% solution of ammonium alginate in distilled water. The faces to be joined are preferably melted with distilled water before the alginate film is applied. |
