Thermocouple device is intended particularly for measuring high temperatures in a medium such as the refining fumes from a bath of molten cast iron. The device is surrounded by a sheath of heat-resisting material having a cross-section in which the longer axis is at least twice the length of the smaller axis, which is perpendicular to the former. The thermocouple is in contact with the wall of the sheath, at least in the neighborhood of the hot welded end, and the wall thickness is as small as possible and yet to allow the sheath to resist the service temperatures. The thermocouple is operated by placing it in the medium, of which the temperature is to be measured, so that the longer axis of the cross-section of the protective sheath will be practically parallel to the general direction of the fumes traversing the medium. |
