Ltd. and Hydro Chemical & Mineral Corpn.). particularly a multistage flash evaporator system for desalination of salt water, in which the evaporators are arranged at a series of ascending levels, and work at decreasing levels of temperature and pressure from the lowest level evaporator upwards, and are installed in an evaporation piping system utilising the energy liberated by the evaporation to raise feed water against gravity through the succession of evaporators. The piping system comprises a flow path connecting adjacent evaporators, in which a downwardly flowing column of feed water is constantly maintained passing from one evaporator and a longer upwardly flowing column of a boiling mixture of feedwater and steam passes to the next high level evaporator, liquid being present in the lower part of this path to form a liquid seal between adjacent evaporators. The piping system may be formed as an ascending sinusoidal pipe with a vapour-liquid separating evaporator on the top of each sine curve, the shorter limb of the curve carrying downwardly flowing feed water and the longer limb the upwardly flowing boiling feed water-steam mixture, while liquid in the troughs of the sine curve provides a seal between adjacent evaporators.</p> |
