Fraudulent operation involving a document such as a cheque is detected by an optical reader employing cylindrical lenses through which interference with a pattern of ink on the document will be observed. The pattern is not visible to the naked eye. A cheque is printed in the usual manner but with a personalised pattern which can be a separate part of the cheque and may comprise a diagonal line pattern. A reader comprising a number of cylindrical lenses carries a pattern which aligns with the personal pattern. The use of a sensitive ink renders it difficult to erase any writing without destroying the pattern.
