The adhesion of the anti-reflective coating to the optical element is improved by an intermediate metal oxide layer which is transparent and insoluble in water. The preferred oxide is aluminium oxide of 30 angstroms (pref. 10 angstroms) thickness. The optical element is either polymethyl methacrylate or polystyrene or acrylonitrile or polycarbonate or one of their copolymers. The anti-reflective coating is either magnesium fluoride or calcium fluoride.
