Serial data collection and distribution system with location coding in spatially expanded controls has shift registers connected in ring formation. The two shift registers are equally long. The bit stores of the first shift register (61-68) are arranged separately (12, 13) or in groups (10, 11) and are locally distributed. The bit storex of the second shift register are arranged in a central location 71-78) so that a defined number of lock signals shift the contents of the locally distributed shift register (16) into the central shift register (14) and vice versa.
