The spring shock-absorbing device is in the form of a rail vehicle buffer, having two housing sections telescoping together and spring-loaded apart. The distance for which they can move apart and thus the pre-loading of the spring is determined by a holder ring fitting in a groove in one of them and acting as a stop for the other. The housing sections (1, 2) are integral with their respective thrust plates against which the spring acts. The holder ring is a spring circlip (3) with a tapering outer face (3a), so that when the housing sections are fitted together, it is first thrust into the groove (1b) in (1) and then springs out again to act as a stop for the other (2).
