A method for the production of a synthetic complex metal oxide, or a hydroxidic compound which is decomposable to the complex metal oxide, comprises reacting an intermetallic compound or an alloy of the metals of the complex oxide with water or steam by heating at a temperature of from 100‹ to 600‹ C. and which, if the starting material is an alloy, is so high that this alloy is single-phased on entering the reaction. The oxide is suitably a synthetic spinel of the formula in which Me(II) is Cd, Zn, Ni, Cu, Mg, Mn, Fe or Co and Me(III) is Ga, Al, In, Cr or Fe. Examples describe the preparation of the magnesiumgallium spinel MgGa 2 O 4 , the zinc-gallium spinel ZnGa 2 O 4 , and the yttrium-gallium garnet Y 3 Ga 5 O 12 . The complex metal oxide may be doped by alloying the starting material with the desired doping element. An example describes the preparation of a manganese-doped magnesium-gallium spinel Mg 0 . 90 Ga 2 . 06 Mn 0 . 01 O 4 . |
