Apparatus for producing flake ice comprises a cylindrical refrigerant evaporator immersed in water in a reservoir 25 and surrounded by a rotatable helical ice remover 43 whose inner surface is such that the ice layer on the evaporator is formed with a ridged surface. The effect is achieved in the illustrated embodiment by forming the ice remover with an elliptical inner envelope, but the inner envelope may be substantially hexagonal, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), or may be circular in which case the remover is provided with fixed or adjustable projections on its inner surface, Figs. 6-8 (not shown). Water is supplied to the reservoir through a pipe 38 under the control of a float valve 39, and flake ice is discharged through an opening 53. Refrigerant supplied by a compressor 14 through a condenser 15 and an expansion device 16 enters the evaporator through the funnel over end 17a of a pipe 17 and leaves the evaporator through a pipe 18. The ice remover has a free lower end and is driven by a motor 46 through a gear mechanism 45. The reservoir has a flange 32 with bayonet slots which are engaged by rivets 33. Preferred dimensions are disclosed. |
