1,081,158. Seals. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. April 6, 1966 [April 21 1965], No. 15442/66. Heading F2B. [Also in Division F1] A seal between the rotor and stator of, for example, a compressor of a gas-turbine, comprises a pair of flanges 38, 40 which extend axially from the rotor 10 and co-operate with fins 42, 44 disposed on opposite sides of a stator member 32 to provide metering gaps 46, 48, air to the seal being supplied through one or more vanes 24 having openings 26. The arrangement is such that as expansion occurs in the rotor, one set of gaps decreases as the other set increases. The controlled flow of air passing through the seal may be used for any desired sealing or cooling purpose within the engine. The air is bled from the diffuser outlet 4 of the compressor and is directed through openings 47 in a chamber 30 to the seal. Further fins 54 on a sealing flange 52 co-operate with the outer surface of the flange 40 and permit air to re-enter the gas path. |
