The instrument is used to position road mile posts or kilometre posts. It is also used to measure distances at which the posts should be located. The instrument has a wheel (12) with tyre and a toothed wheel (14) with a magnetic pick-off (13), which gives pulses whose number is proportional to the distance travelled by the tyre wheel (12) along a road. The pulses are supplied to a counting unit (41) to provide a display of the distance covered. The pulses are also supplied to a marking unit (15) which has a preset counter (20) corresponding to the distances at which marking is required. The unit (15) is connected to a solenoid valve (29) which allows a jet of gas to eject a paint at set intervals.
