The main purpose is to provide a means for charging the battery of a vehicle when it is stationary. The electric motor (2) is coupled to the dynamo (1) which is also driven from the vehicle engine through a clutch (4). The motor can be plugged in to the standard AC mains when the vehicle is in its depot. The dynamo therefore need only be rated to provide minimum necessary power when the vehicle is operating as any necessary additional battery charging takes place during the idle period. The smaller dynamo allows a reduction in overall space in the engine compartment which is not entirely absorbed by the addition of the motor as the latter is directly coupled to the dynamo and therefore runs at a high speed.
