A decorative laminate comprises a plastics sheet 12 having printing on one side, an adhesive layer 18 on one side ofthe sheet 12, and a plastics backing 14 in coextensive and facing relation to the layer 18 and temporarily secured to the sheet 12 by the adhesive layer 18, the sheet 12 and backing 14 having been stretched to a similar extent from their normal conditions prior to being secured by the adhesive layer. In a method described for making the laminate, the sheet 12, of e.g. polyvinyl, having decoration 16 on one face, is fed from an unwind roller, via a preheat roller and tensioning rollers, to an adhesive applying station, where the adhesive layer 18 is applied to the other face of the sheet by an engraved roller. The adhesive coated sheet is then fed via a curing tunnel, where the adhesive is dried by hot air, to a pair of combining rollers, where the backing 14 is applied, the laminate so formed being slit longitudinally on its way to a rewind roller. The backing 14, which is of e.g. polyethylene, and which has previously been treated to receive printing by exposure to an electric spark gap or discharge or by electrostatic etching, and has also previously been printed and embossed, is fed to the above mentioned combining rollers from an unwind roller via a preheat roller, stretching rollers, and a slitting roller which forms perforations 22. The embossing, which is preferably longitudinal, reduces the area of contact of the backing and the adhesive layer, and facilitates stripping of the backing, as also do the perforations 22. The printing on the backing may be instructions 20 and/or length indications. |
