Electrophoretic coating of metal articles in presence of an organic binder (I), which can be diluted or emulsified with water, tension between electrodes being 124-155 volts, bath temp. 27-32 deg.C., and the distance between the electrodes and the edges of the metal article 35-115 mm. The articles are generally coated with a thin non-conducting layer, generally of oxide. The process is esp. applied to Al ribbon, which can thus be completely insulated for use in transformers. The coating is conducted at pH 7.5-8.2. (I) are free from ammonium cations, and contain no, or very few, alkali or alkaline earth cations. (I) is pref. based on oleophthalic resin. Additives, such as finely powdered or precipitated fillers, and non-hydrolysable siccatives, may be present. |
