Extruded thermoplastics netting in strip form, Fig. 5, having two sets of strands 6, 7 wherein set 6 is parallel to the edges 12 of the strip, is made by extruding tubular netting from an extrusion head 1, Fig. 2, in which neither set of strands is parallel to the direction of extrusion, and hauling off the netting such that it rotates about a mandrel 9 with the strands of one set following a fixed helical path over the mandrel surface whilst at the same time cutting the tubular netting by means of a knife 13 between a pair of adjacent strands of this set. Extrusion head 1 comprises circumferentially orificed concentric die rings 4, 5. As shown, outer die ring 4 is rotated and inner die ring 5 is held stationary, but preferably, to simplify machine construction, this situation is reversed. The strand set from the stationary die ring follows the helical path over the mandrel, which path is determined by the position of a roller 15 upstream of the haul-off means (not shown). Further rollers 16, 17 and (18), Fig. 3 (not shown), are provided to guide the strip initially into a direction parallel to the direction of extrusion and then through and out of coolant liquid 3. As shown the axis of roller 15 is at 45 degrees to the horizontal, but variation in this angle and position of the roller may be made to vary the width of the resulting strip, see Figs. 8-10 (not reproduced). Knife 13 preferably cuts between two thickened strands 6, Fig. 4 (not shown) to give the strip reinforced edges, Fig. 5. The mesh shape may be square, Fig. 5, rectangular, Fig. 6 (not shown), or parallelogramic. The blade of knife 13 may be partially accommodated within a slot in mandrel 9. |
