Metal strip (a) is coated on one side with moten metal (b), esp. molten in zinc (b) applied to steel strip (a). The heated strip (a) travels above the surface of the melt (b) in a zone filled with protective gas; and the melt is driven upwards e.g. by a pump, to form a cushion in contact with the underside of the strip. The cushion is at least as wide as the strip, and the top surface of the suction is flattened by contact with the strip (a). The strip pref. travels under tension along a path parallel with the surface of the bath (b), and greater upward force is used to lift the bath near the two sides of the strip. A gas cushion is pref. used above the strip to step the melt (b) reaching the top surface of the strip (a). The strip is pref. in contact with the melt for min. 0.5 seconds, esp. 1-5 seconds.
