An antimicrobial compsn. comprises (1) 40-70 wt. % of the reaction prod. of Epsilon-caprolactam (I) with N-alkylalkane diamines of formula R1R2N-(CH2)n-NH2 (II) (where R1 is 10-18 C aliphatic gp.; R2 is H or 1-4C aliphatic gp.; and n is 2-6) in a (I):(II) molar ratio of 1-10:1 and (2) 30-60wt. % of an oxazolidine deriv. of formula (III) (where R is 10-14C aliphatic gp.; m is 2 or 3, and n is 0 or 1). The compsn. is used to preserve and/or sterilise industrial water (i.e. cooling water, air-conditioning water, etc). The compsn. is usable under adverse conditions in small quantities and does not lead to the formation of resistant species.
