The floating dam enables canals or similar waterways of varying cross-sectional profile to be effectively closed off. It is designed as a pontoon whose base forms the sealing surface. It has two buoyant caissons, arranged parallel to one another between which are located two profiled sections that can be moved horizontally and can conform to the profile of the canal bank. The profiled sections and caissons contain floodable chambers and the sections can be extended or retracted by e.g. hydraulic piston-cylinder units. The complete dam is controlled from a wheel house.
