The printed characters pass under a narrow window and produce a waveform via a photoelectric cell and amplifier which is monitored by the logic circuit. The waveform is strobed by a clock to produce a bit at each increase in signal strength after the start of the character recognition interval, but no bit when a decrease or no change is detected. The pattern is then compared with a repertoire of patterns to determine the most likely printed letter. A detector to find the spaces between letters is also required so that the start of each recognition interval can be correctly timed. In the case of touching and even slightly overlapping characters a new recognition interval can be initiated once the first character has been successfully recognized.
|
