Between the tank wall (6) and the coating is disposed a hollow space (13) which is contiguous or subdivided into a plurality of chambers and serves for monitoring the leaktightness of the tank wall. The coating (8, 10, 11) has at least one open-pored flat structure (8) which is supported on the tank wall (6), is provided with elevations (2) and is coated with at least one flexible coating paint layer (10) which is petroleum-, oil- and alcohol-resistant and inhibits even the diffusion of vapours of these substances. The paint has penetrated at least partly into pores of the flat structure (8), providing the latter with a better dimensional stability. During the production of a liquid tank of this kind, the flat structure (8), provided with or without the coating paint layer (10), is laid on the wall (6) to be lined with the elevations (2) facing said wall (6) in such a manner that a complete covering results. Subsequently, the flat structure (8), if without coating paint layer, is provided with at least one coating paint layer (10). <IMAGE>
