The apparatus can automatically place piece goods (5), which are set on a conveyor (2), in layers and can separate the said layers. The stacking apparatus has a lifting framework (6). The lifting framework (6) is connected to a switching crossbar (8) and thereby ensures that during movement from the stacking position (S) into the raised destacking or magazining position, the switching rail (9) moves the holding elements (13), which are connected to the switching fingers (12), outside the area of movement of the piece goods (5) which are stacked one on top of the other. Beneath the switching rail (9), there are arranged retractable supporting arms (15') which, during the downward movement of the lifting framework (6) are moved outside the region of the switching crossbar (8) by contact with a cam (17). <IMAGE>
