H-Di:benzo-(b,e)-oxepinone cpds. - prepd. from 2-halomethyl-phenyl-haloformate and aromatic carbocyclic cpds., and used for prepn. of vat dyestuff intermediates

11-H-dibenzo- b,e oxepin-6-ones of formula (I). (where R'-R8 are halogen, OH, H, CN, 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy, 1-4C alkylmercapto or alkylsulphonyl, CF3, CCl3 or an amino gp. -NR9R10 where R9 and R10 are the same or different and are H, 1-4C alkyl or alkyl- carbonyl) are prepared by reacting a (2-halomethyl)-phenyl-halo-formate of formula (II). (where X' and X2 are with an aromatic carbocyclic cpd. of formula (III). In the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst at 0-200 degrees C, pref. 0-150 degrees C, and opt. a solvent. Pressures are pref. 0.5-2 bars. Cpds. (I) where R1-R8 and R9 and R10 are as defined but where at least one of R'-R8 is H or Me are new. (I) are obtained in high yields and purity (I) can be re-arranged in the presence of Friedel-Crafts catalysts to give 4-hydroxyanthrones which are intermediates for the prepn. of rat dyestuffs.
