Deodorising manure and effluent

Manure and effluents are deodourised by contacting them with an aq. soln. contg. a SO3-ion releasing material consisting of Na- or K pyrosulphite or Na- or K hydrosulphite.The process is esp. useful for treating liq. manure of the type obtd. e.g. from factory farming of pigs and chickens, in which the excrement is converted into liq. form with water for ease of removal and held in larger storage tanks for e.g. several weeks before emptying. During this time, foul odours are given off which are not generally however harmful to the health. Addition of sulphite ion-releasing cpds. named above now destroys: these odours, without evolution of sulphur dioxide or other pungent gases.
