1,260,312. Desulphation of organic materials. ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd. 11 Aug., 1969 [27 Aug., 1968], No. 40996/68. Heading C2C. A process for the desulphation of an organic sulphur containing substance comprising an aryl, alkaryl or alkyl sulphonate or sulphate, an α-sulpho acid, an α-sulpho keto acid, a sulphonated quinone or a sulphated alkene, alcohol or ester comprises treating it in a liquid state with a readily carbonizable material, e.g. a cellulosic material such a wood flour, bleached wood pulp or sawdust, whereby the said material is caused to react with and substantially remove the sulphuric acid present. The desulphation may be effected from -10‹ to 110‹ C. using from 0À5- 3 g. or carbonizable material per g. of unneutralized sulphuric acid. The carbonaceous residue remaining after desulphation may be removed by using a filter aid such as a fuller's earth or an excess of the carbonizable material. In addition to the treatment with the readily carbonizable material the sulphate or sulphonic acid may be treated with an oxide, hydroxide, carbonate or carboxylate salt of calcium or barium in an amount insufficient to completely neutralize the free sulphuric acid initially present. |
