<p>1476036 Chlorination of an aromatic compound DOW CHEMICAL CO 15 April 1975 15419/75 Heading C2C The invention comprises a process for chlorinating an aromatic compound corresponding to the Formula I wherein R is H, phenyl, alkyl or carboxyalkyl; R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl, phenyl, alky phenyl or halo in the ortho or meta position; and n is 0 to 2 by reacting the aromatic compound with sulphuryl chloride wherein the reaction is conducted in the presence of a metal salt and a sulphur compound at catalysts the metal salt being a halide or phenoxide of antimony, aluminium, iron, tin, titanium or zinc and the sulphur compound being thiophene, p-dithiane, diphenyl sulphide, thianthene dibenzyl sulphide, polyphenylene sulphide, diphenyl disulphide, thiophenol, dibenzothiophene, pentamethylene sulphide, or any one of said compounds substituted by allyl, alkoxy, phenyl or halo; or carbon disulphide whereby a compound of Formula I having from 1 to 3 chlorine atoms on each phenyl ring is produced.</p> |
