In the arrangement described a signal from a magnetic pick-up arrangement corresponds to the speed of the engine and after conversion into a voltage is applied to the circuit shown which comprises a differentiating circuit and filter arrangement. The output signal (surge signal) on line 22 is used to control an operating parameter of the engine, typically the air/fuel mixture or concentration of exhaust gas recirculation, when a tolerance level is reached.
