1475358 Oxychlorination DOW CHEMICAL CO 29 Aug 1974 [29 Aug 1973] 37858/74 Heading C2C Chlorinated hydrocarbons are produced by contacting a mixture of O 2 or an O 2 -containing gas, HCl and an ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon or partially chlorinated ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon, the oxygen being employed in a state of purity of not less than 50% with respect to non-condensible gases, in amounts of 0À4-0À8 mole of O 2 and 1À8-2À2 moles of HCl per mole of hydrocarbon, with a Deacon-type Cu oxychlorination catalyst at a temperature and pressure at which oxychlorination occurs, treating the resulting products with water to remove any unreacted HCl, cooling the remainder of the products to remove condensible chlorinated hydrocarbons and recycling sufficient remaining monocondensible gases to the reactor to supply 30-60% of the feed. The reaction is preferably effected in a plurality of tubular reactors which are cooled externally to maintain a temperature of 180-350‹ C. The O 2 preferably has a purity of >90% e.g. pure O 2 or O 2 /stream. The catalyst may be alumina loaded with 1-10% Cu as CuCl 2 . In the example ethylene is converted to dichloroethane.
